How to Verify a File Sync Transfer Before Deleting Originals

Verify a File Sync transfer by reconciling counts, opening representative files, checking video playback and sizes, and creating a backup before cleanup.

A File Sync transfer is complete only when the destination can prove it received usable files. Reconcile counts, inspect representative documents and photos, play long videos, compare unusually large file sizes, and confirm the destination folder. For irreplaceable files, create another verified copy before removing originals.

Record the expected batch

Before transferring, note the selection:

  • Number of photos
  • Number of videos
  • Number of documents or other files
  • Approximate total size
  • Source folder or album
  • Oldest and newest items
  • Largest file

This inventory can be brief. Its purpose is to make “everything seems to be there” measurable.

Reconcile the destination

Compare the expected count with the number received. If counts differ, do not immediately repeat the whole transfer. Identify whether the source contained unsupported items, hidden files, duplicates, or an interrupted batch.

Check that the files landed in the intended folder rather than being split between Downloads, Photos, and another import location.

Inspect a representative sample

Open:

  1. The oldest and newest photo.
  2. A portrait and landscape image.
  3. A small and a very large document.
  4. The longest video, including its final seconds.
  5. A file with a non-English or unusual filename.
  6. Any item that is critical or irreplaceable.

Look for zero-byte files, unexpected extensions, missing audio, wrong orientation, low-resolution copies, or dates that no longer sort correctly.

Compare large files directly

Large videos and archives are more vulnerable to interrupted transfers. Compare their sizes between source and destination when both systems expose that information. If a checksum workflow is available to you, it provides stronger confirmation, but opening and playing the content is still useful.

Create a recovery copy

Transfer is not backup. If the computer now contains the only destination copy, hardware failure or accidental cleanup can still remove it. Back up the verified folder to another appropriate location before deleting the phone originals.

Clean up deliberately

Only after verification:

  • Move files from the staging folder into their permanent structure.
  • Remove verified temporary copies.
  • Keep an audit note for an important migration.
  • Review Recently Deleted or trash behavior before emptying it.
  • End any local browser-transfer session.

If any check fails, keep the source untouched and retry only the affected batch. Current transfer features and supported formats are documented in the File Sync App Store listing and Google Play listing.

Frequently asked questions

Is a completed progress bar enough verification?

No. It shows that the transfer process ended, not that every file is present, readable, complete, and correctly organized.

Do I need to open every transferred file?

For a large batch, reconcile the full count and inspect a representative sample that includes old, new, small, large, and unusual files. Open every irreplaceable or critical file when practical.

When is it safe to delete the source?

After the destination is verified and important files also have a separate recovery copy. If uncertainty remains, keep the source unchanged.
