To connect Phone Drive to a Mac or Windows PC, put the mobile device and computer on the same trusted local Wi-Fi network, open Phone Drive’s computer-transfer feature, and enter the address shown by the app into the computer. Keep the app open during the session and stop the transfer service when finished.

Check the network first

Both devices must be able to communicate locally. Confirm that:

  • The phone and computer show the same Wi-Fi network name.
  • The network is private and controlled by you.
  • Guest or client isolation is not separating devices.
  • A VPN is not blocking local traffic.
  • Phone Drive has local-network permission where the operating system requires it.

A phone using cellular data and a computer using Wi-Fi are not on the same local network, even if both have internet access.

Open the connection from a browser

  1. Launch Phone Drive on the phone or tablet.
  2. Start its Wi-Fi, web, or computer-transfer feature.
  3. Note the complete local address displayed by the app.
  4. Open a current browser on the Mac or Windows PC.
  5. Type the address exactly, including punctuation and any port number.
  6. Confirm that the page shows the expected Phone Drive interface and files.

The address is local and often temporary. Bookmarking it is less useful than returning to the app each time.

Transfer in a controlled batch

Create a staging folder on the computer, then upload or download a small test file. Open it on the destination before attempting a larger batch. For important files, work in groups that are easy to count and verify.

Keep the phone awake, leave Phone Drive in the foreground when practical, and connect both devices to power for a long transfer. Avoid switching networks while files are moving.

If the connection fails

Work through these checks in order:

  1. Refresh the transfer screen and use its current address.
  2. Confirm both devices still use the same Wi-Fi.
  3. Re-enable local-network permission for Phone Drive.
  4. Pause a VPN or privacy relay that blocks local access.
  5. Check the computer firewall for a local-network prompt.
  6. Try a different browser.
  7. Restart Phone Drive and create a new session.
  8. Restart the router only if other local devices also cannot communicate.

Do not weaken the router or firewall permanently just to make a transfer work. Restore any temporary security change immediately afterward.

The current Phone Drive App Store listing describes Wi-Fi computer transfer, browser access, Finder or Windows Explorer workflows, file management, and previews. Available connection methods can vary by platform and edition.

Frequently asked questions

Does Phone Drive need a desktop app?

Its current listings describe computer access through a browser and, on supported platforms, Finder or Windows Explorer. Follow the connection options displayed in your app version.

Why does the local address stop working?

The address can change when the transfer session, app, phone, or network restarts. Reopen the transfer screen and use the current address shown there.

Can I connect on public Wi-Fi?

Avoid public or shared networks. Use a trusted private network because the transfer interface is intended for nearby devices on the same local network.
